San Gil does one thing better than anywhere else in Colombia: it gets your adrenaline pumping. Hidden in the mountains of Santander, this little town draws adventure travellers from across the world for its white-water rafting, paragliding, canyoning, caving, and more- all set against some dramatic mountain scenery.

The town itself is functional rather than beautiful, the roads are noisy, and the pace is a little chaotic. But if you’re looking for a burst of physical excitement between the beaches, coffee towns, and colonial cities of Colombia, San Gil delivers on all these aspects.

Why San Gil is Colombia’s Adventure Capital

The Santander region has geography that lends itself to every kind of outdoor activity: deep river gorges, towering canyon walls, tropical waterfalls, and cave systems carved into limestone. San Gil sits at the centre of it all, with a well-developed network of tour operators, experienced guides, and affordable packages that make the logistics super easy. You just need to arrive and check in!

Who San Gil Is Right For

San Gil is for travellers who want to push their limits a little and experience physical challenges set amongst Colombia’s beautiful rural charm. You don’t need to be particularly fit, most activities are accessible to healthy adults, but you do need a willingness to get wet, muddy, and possibly terrified (speaking from experience).

If you’re someone who avoids heights, cold water, or the outdoors in general, San Gil will be a hard sell. Similarly, if you’re chasing nightlife or a beautiful colonial town to wander, you’ll find more of that in Barichara just 45 minutes away.

The Best Time of Year to Visit San Gil

San Gil is warm year-round, sitting at around 1,000m elevation with average temperatures of 23°C. The dry seasons, December to February and July to August, bring more reliable weather for outdoor activities.

I visited in April, which sits in the wetter shoulder season. The upside was almost no tourists, quieter trails, and a more relaxed pace.

The downside: some days are too rainy for paragliding and the rivers run faster (which, depending on your outlook, is either a bonus or a problem).

I definitely experienced more cloud cover than I saw scrolling through instagram pre-trip, but this didn’t take away from my experience at all. However, it’s something to take into consideration if visiting around this time of year and I would have loved an extra pair of socks and light jacket.

If you’re travelling in a group and want a social atmosphere, aim for peak season. If you prefer to have the canyon to yourself, shoulder season is ideal.

The Top Adventure Activities in San Gil

These are the main reasons people come. Most can be booked through your hostel, directly with operators, or via GetYourGuide or Viator, both have verified listings with English-speaking guides and cancellation policies.

White-Water Rafting on the Río Fonce and Río Suárez

white water rafting on the rio suarez in san gil colombia

Rafting is the headline act in San Gil, and for good reason. There are two rivers to choose from depending on your experience level.

The Río Fonce is the more accessible option: Grade II to III rapids, suitable for first-timers and families. The Río Suárez is a different story. With Grade IV to V rapids, it’s one of the more challenging commercially-run rafting routes in South America.

I went down the Suárez as a rafting first-timer and it was genuinely terrifying, and completely brilliant. There were five of us in the raft plus a guide, and by the end we’d formed the kind of fast friendship that only comes from shared near-death experiences. We laughed about it afterwards over an included lunch and cold beer. Highly recommend.

What to expect: Half-day trips typically include transport, equipment, a guide, and photos. Prices range from around 80,000 to 150,000 COP depending on the river and operator.

Paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon

Views from the launch site at the Chicamocha canyon

This is an authentic paragliding experience, with the town already sitting at 1000m elevation before you’ve even got off the ground. The launch site sits at around 2,400m and you fly over the Chicamocha Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world.

There’s a lower tandem option available, but if you’re already here, I’d go hard or go home!

The views are almost impossible to describe. Red rock walls with ancient mountain ridges and the canyon dropping away beneath you. It’s like something from a different planet.

One practical note: Expect to feel a little queasy this day. Both paragliding itself and the drive to the launch site had my stomach a little uncomfortable as it’s a couple of hours up windy mountain roads in the back of a truck. If you’re prone to motion sickness, take medication before you go and bring water.

I also felt nauseated towards the end of the flight from the altitude and vertigo, which may be worth knowing so it doesn’t catch you off guard.

Typical price: 150,000 to 250,000 COP for a tandem flight including transport and video.

Waterfall Abseiling and Adventure Day at Juan Curí

image of juan curi waterfall near san gil in colombia
It’s hard to put into perspective the scale of this waterfall, it is huge!

Juan Curí is an ecopark with a waterfall about 45 minutes from San Gil by bus. The driver drops you at the side of the road and the park entrance is a short walk in. I’d recommend having maps open on the journey so you can flag down when exactly you want to get off the bus.

The main attraction is abseiling down the face of the waterfall, which is as exhilarating as it sounds. I went in April and had almost the whole place to ourselves. The guides were patient and safety-focused, and felt very professional, even between my screaming and nervous silence.

There are also other activities on site such as hiking trails, zip lining, canyoning, swim spots, and a small restaurant if you want to make a day of it, which I recommend!

Getting there: Take the bus towards Charalá from the San Gil terminal and ask the driver to drop you at Juan Curí. Cost is minimal, around 5,000 COP each way.

Spelunking (Caving) in Cueva del Indio

cueva del indio cave tour in san gil colombia

I haven’t been myself, but Cueva del Indio comes highly recommended by fellow travellers and is consistently one of the top-rated activities in the area. Inside the cave you’ll find bats, impressive stalagmites and stalactites, and, reportedly, a moment the guides call “jumping into the void.” I’ll leave that one as a surprise.

A guide is required to enter, and you’ll need proper footwear and swimwear. It’s not a narrow, claustrophobic crawl, but it is a genuine adventure. A good option if you want something different from the “above-ground” activities, or if bad weather rules out paragliding for the day.

Day Trips from San Gil

San Gil’s location in Santander makes it an excellent base for exploring one of Colombia’s most underrated regions, in my opinion. These three day trips are all worth your time.

Chicamocha Canyon National Park

The canyon is one of the natural wonders of South America. At over 2000m deep, it rivals the Grand Canyon in scale, and it’s almost completely unknown outside Colombia. Walking into it, or looking down into it from the cable car, produces that humbling, peaceful (or existential) feeling of your own mortality and acute awareness of yourself.

It’s a landscape that resets your perspective and reshapes how you view the world. I will never, ever, forget driving through it.

How to visit: You can reach the national park independently by bus from San Gil, or book a guided day tour that includes the cable car (teleférico) and access to the park’s adventure zone.

Barichara: Colombia’s Most Beautiful Village

Barichara is so beautifully preserved, from the streets to the buildings to the cars!

Barichara deserves more than a day trip, in fact I could write a whole guide on it. I’d recommend staying at least one night if your schedule allows. The town is everything San Gil isn’t: unhurried, beautifully preserved, and genuinely lovely to walk around.

Cobbled streets, colonial churches, design shops, good coffee, and restaurants serving everything from traditional Santandereano food to wood-fired pizza. The main square and church are postcard-perfect. The pace of life is slow in the best way, peaceful without being boring.

It’s 45 minutes from San Gil by bus or taxi, and the combination of the two makes for a satisfying few days in the region.

I also stayed in this eco hostel, La Pacha, just outside of Barichara which a 1000% recommend and want to support in any way possible. They are the loveliest group and it is such a special place, but takes a little more work to get there. Be prepared to walk a while from the main road.

The Güane Colonial Trail

A breathtaking view from a little bar in Guane

The walk from Barichara to Güane follows an ancient stone path built by the Guane indigenous people and later used during the colonial period. It’s one of the most scenic hikes in Colombia- around 9km, mostly downhill, with breathtaking views of the canyon and valley.

Güane itself is tiny, charming, and weathered. There are fossils for sale from local sellers, a small museum, and a couple of places to get an ice cream or a cold beer at the end. The beer, earned.

The path is well-marked and easy to follow without a guide. I would recommend to start in Barichara early to avoid the midday heat as I got sunburned, which I won’t include a photo of.

Where to Eat and Drink in San Gil

To be honest, San Gil is not a food destination. But hey, it can’t have everything, and the town more than compensates in other ways. That said, you won’t go hungry, and you won’t spend much either.

The regional dish to try is Mute, a hearty Santandereano soup made with corn, cassava, potato, peas, and meat. It’s comforting, filling, and exactly what you want after a cold morning on the river. Many of the best places to eat feel less like restaurants and more like someone’s home, large open-plan spaces with big communal tables, an open fire, and food cooked the same way it’s been cooked here for decades. Lean into it.

A few well-rated spots worth trying:

  • Restaurante Balcón Colombiano: reliable Colombian classics, good value
  • Restaurante La Cocina de Lolo: popular with locals, traditional home-style cooking
  • El Mesón del Arriero: solid regional food in a rustic setting
  • El Maná: a good everyday option for lunch
  • Penélope Pizzeria & Steakhouse: for when you want something different after three days of arepas

Practical Information

San Gil has a huge range of hostels aimed at the adventure-travel crowd, plus a few mid-range guesthouses and hotel options if you prefer more privacy. Most of the recommended places are close to the main plaza and within walking distance of tour operators.

How to Get to San Gil

How Many Days Do You Need in San Gil?

It depends, but I would say three to four days is the sweet spot. This gives you enough time for two or three activities, a day trip to Chicamocha or Barichara, and a night or two to decompress at the hostel with potentially sore legs.

I spent five days (four nights) and did three activities: rafting, paragliding, and Juan Curí abseiling, plus a full day in Barichara and Güane. But take into account that there is SO much more to choose from: bungee jumping, zip lining, a multitude of caves, canyoning, and more.

However if you’re tight on time, three days and two activities is perfectly doable.

Safety in San Gil

San Gil felt safe throughout my visit. I never experienced anything that felt threatening or sketchy, and the town has a well-worn backpacker infrastructure that keeps things reasonably straightforward for tourists.

Standard precautions apply: don’t leave valuables unattended, be aware of your surroundings at night, and keep your phone in your pocket on busy streets.

A few things worth knowing about the adventure activities specifically:

  • All the operators I used felt professional and safety-conscious. Waivers are standard, please read them.
  • If you have a genuine health condition (heart issues, back problems, pregnancy) take the warnings on those waivers seriously. These activities involve real physical stress.
  • Always book through your hostel’s recommended operators or a verified platform like GetYourGuide. Avoid random street touts.
  • The streets in the town centre are noisy and traffic-heavy. Not dangerous, just something to be aware of if you’re a light sleeper or sensitive to air quality.
